A Study out of Fascination – How UGG Boots are Made

  • I’ve never been one to make a study about fashion products, but this one just stirred my curiosity to a whole new level. I am both amazed and fascinated at what the kids and other people are wearing nowadays called Ugg boots. Boots are supposedly worn in the winter, but I have seen a lot of people wearing them in the hot days of summer. Apparently, as explained to me by my niece, she said that it keeps feet warm during winter and cold during the summer. For the life of me, I cannot get what she meant by that.

Drawn by curiosity, I decided to test her statement by figuring out how these boots were made and what materials they are made of. Genuine Ugg boots are made from Merino sheepskin, which is a double faced sheep skin. This is the material that is said to keep your feet warm and cold.

So, how are these boots made?

First, the sheep skin hide is processed by preserving it with salt. It needs to be processed before it can be used as a material for the boots. Fats, dirt, and muscle tissues are removed from the hide by rinsing it in cold water. Excess of these materials are scraped off manually and carefully. After they’ve been removed, the hides are then treated to lower their pH levels, improve their structure, and prevent decay.

Once the hide has been fully processed, they are cut into panels and the sheep wool is dyed and dried. This will allow consumers to choose the kind of colour profile they like for their boots. Although the natural shade is better, a lot of people still prefer bright colours.

The skin will be cleaned by white spirit after it has dried. The white spirit is used to remove excess fat, dirt, and muscle that were missed by the previous treatments. After this round of cleaning, the skin will go through another round of processing. This round will include conditioning and combing out the tangles. The hide is then converted into different shapes and sizes and sewn together soles with the use of industrial machines. The soles are also sewn into the boots.

I actually bought a pair because I wanted to try it out for the summer season. I am astounded because my niece actually said the truth about these things.
